Heath Ledger doco to premiere in Perth

An upcoming documentary about the life of the late Heath Ledger will have its Australian premiere in Perth, the actor's home town.

The film, I Am Heath Ledger, will celebrate his life as an actor and includes footage he made of himself on his own camera and interviews with his friends and family including his sister Kate, Australian actors Ben Mendelsohn and Naomi Watts and Ang Lee, who directed him in the Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain.

Derik Murray, the film's director, has made several other "I Am" documentaries on other famous figures including Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Evel Knievel, Chris Farley and JFK Jr.

Ledger died in in 2008 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

Before his death, Ledger made an impact as an actor with roles in Hollywood films such as Brokeback Mountain and A Knight's Tale, and was awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar posthumously for his role as the Joker in the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.

The world premiere of the film will take place at the Tribecca Film Festival in New York on April 23 while the Ledger family will attend the Australian premiere on May 9 at Luna Cinemas in Perth.

I Am Heath Ledger will open in select Australian cinemas for one week only from May 11.
