Sydney man not guilty of table leg killing

A Sydney man has been found not guilty of killing his housemate with a wooden table leg during an argument over drugs.

Ian Stanbury, 47, was found unconscious with head injuries in December 2014 at a Cartwright unit in western Sydney and later died in hospital.

Police alleged Steven Ayshow struck Mr Stanbury in the head at the pair's home after some ice belonging to him went missing.

But on Friday afternoon Mr Ayshow was found not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court after the jury had deliberated for several days.

Jurors had been told that on the morning of the alleged attack Mr Ayshow and Mr Stanbury were seen arguing at the flat.

During the trial crown prosecutor David Scully said witnesses saw Mr Stanbury - nicknamed "Snake" - bleeding from the head.

One witness allegedly heard him say: "I was waking up and he hit me over the head with a bit of wood."

Mr Scully said DNA consistent with Mr Ayshow's was found on a bloodstained table leg at the flat.

Mr Ayshow was also secretly recorded by police telling another man Mr Stanbury "died for nothing" and "all he was supposed to do was watch the drugs".

Mr Ayshow told a psychiatrist he struck Mr Stanbury in self-defence after he threatened to kill him.
