Tasmania is on the map for Midnight Oil's first tour in more than 15 years.

The legendary Australian band, which called it a day when singer Peter Garrett entered politics, took to Sydney Harbour this morning to announce the 'Great Circle' world tour.

The band will play Hobart's Derwent Entertainment Centre on November 1st, Garrett saying he'd hoped the band would reunite one day.

"We've got such a shared history of making music together, it just feels incredible to walk into the room... it's a little bit like an alchemy and you can feel that feeling that you first had.

"Once we got there, there was no question about it. At least for me."

Tickets go on sale Monday February 27.
