Children's Commissioner quits

Tasmania's Commissioner for Children and Young People has resigned abruptly after almost three years in the job.

Mark Morrissey has decided to transition to part time work after more than three decades in senior leadership roles.

Labor's Josh Willie's jumped on the resignation, portraying it as a deepening crisis for Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma who's office is alleged to have attempted to interfere with his role.

"This comes at a time when when the Minister is embroiled in controversy and the only independent voice for children and young people has resigned today."

Greens' Leader Cassy O'Connor praised the job he did under very challenging conditions.

"It would seem to me that Mr. Morrissey has been frustrated in his interactions with government, he's done his very best to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in Tasmania and yet he's been caught up in the politics ofthe Minister's office to the point where a matter's been referred to the Integrity Commission."

TasCoss CEO Kym Goodes says the shock resignation should prompt a change in how Children's commissioners are appointed.

"It is critical that we look differently now at how we take what is a sad...an opportunity caused by a resignation that we wished had not happened and think differently about the model that we can put in place."
