NSW social housing wait over for thousands

The NSW government has promised to build more than 2000 new homes to help hundreds of vulnerable families and women lingering on social housing waiting lists.

Five not-for-profit organisations, including St Vincent de Paul and Uniting, will build the new homes on land they own around greater Sydney as part of a funded partnership with the NSW government.

"This land, which is now vacant, will become home to so many in the community who need it the most," Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters on Friday.

Hundreds of the 2200 homes will be aimed at women impacted by domestic violence, the elderly and those facing potential homelessness.

Set to be built on vacant land around Sydney, the Central Coast and Blue Mountains, the housing will be delivered as part of a $1.1 billion fund in seed capital from the government.

It's the largest investment in social housing by a state government.

"This is a game changer for tackling the very long social housing waiting list in NSW," Social Housing Minister Pru Goward said during Friday's announcement.

"It's also part of the affordable housing puzzle because if you have more social housing you take pressure off affordable housing."

Improving housing affordability was one of the premier's pledges when she came into power in January.

"We have a priority list in government of who needs social and affordable housing and we'll go through that priority list," she said on Friday.

The housing developments will form miniature communities, where residents will have access to mental health services and drug and alcohol support, Ms Goward said.

The government aims to invest the $1.1 billion to provide an income stream over the next 25 years, with additional homes built down the track.

Other organisations selected for the fund are BaptistCare, St George Community Housing and Compass Housing Services.
