The younger brother of slain standover figure Walid Ahmad will appear in court after being arrested at Sydney airport over a gangland shooting death in southwest Sydney last year.

The 34-year-old was picked up by NSW homicide squad detectives on Monday night at the international airport after arriving on a flight from the Middle East.

Early on Tuesday morning police said they had charged the man, named in media reports as Mahmoud Ahmad, and he will appear in Waverley Local Court later in the day.

He was arrested in relation to the murder of Safwan Charbaji, 32, who was fatally wounded outside a Condell Park smash repair business last April.

That shooting was linked to the murder of the older Ahmad, 40, who was killed in a spray of bullets on the rooftop car park of Bankstown Central shopping centre weeks later.

Mahmoud Ahmad, known as Brownie, left for Lebanon days after the Condell Park shooting, and was returning via Qatar on Monday when he was arrested, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Sydney has been rocked by a spate of bloody gangland shootings since Charbaji was gunned down.

Last October, hitman Hamad Asaad, 29, who was a key suspect in the murder of Ahmad, was gunned down in the driveway of his family home at Georges Hall.

While Asaad had been linked to a bungled shooting of Mafioso kingpin Pasquale Barbaro in Leichhardt in 2015. Barbaro died a year later when he was executed outside an Earlwood home in Sydney's southwest last November.

In November, NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione launched Strike Force Osprey which was an overarching investigation aimed at establishing the links between at least eight gangland murders.
