A man hit by car in Melbourne's CBD may have been running away after being assaulted and robbed by a gang.

The man, aged in his 20s, was fleeing a gang of four men after being attacked and robbed when he was struck down by a car in a hit-and-run on the corner of Collins Street and King Street in Friday's early hours, the Nine Network reports.

Ambulance Victoria says paramedics were called at 3.30am after reports a man - who was in a stable condition in hospital with upper body injuries - had been hit by a car in Melbourne.
