The Australian Medical Association has come out in support for same-sex marriage, calling for an end to the "damaging" public debate.

President Michael Gannon has penned letters to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Labor leader Bill Shorten calling for a bipartisan approach.

"It is often forgotten that, at the core of this debate, are real people and families. It's time to put an end to this protracted, damaging debate so that they can get on with their lives," Dr Gannon said in a statement on Saturday.
