MCG to host 2018 State of Origin opener

Next year's State of Origin opener will be held in neutral territory in Melbourne, NRL boss Todd Greenberg says.

The 100,000-capacity MCG will host the clash - a NSW home game.

"We hope to see NSW and Queensland fans travelling to Melbourne as well as locals enjoying the best of rugby league in game one," Greenberg told News Corp Australia.

The last time Melbourne hosted an Origin game, more than 90,000 spectators watched NSW beat Queensland at the MCG in game two of the 2015 series.
