The identity of a man whose body was discovered on rocks at a bay south of Hobart is still unknown, police say.

A member of the public made the grim find at Abels Bay in Tasmania's south on Monday.

Authorities believe the body belongs to a man aged in his 40s and that it could have been there for several days.
