“We will keep making sure that we have schools that are up to scratch, I know some of these schools are old, I’ve been to Trevallyn Primary School where I was a student and some of the classrooms there are the same when I was there.”

Meantime, the Minister reckons Tasmania’s not alone when it comes to a school teacher shortage, outlining how insufficient teachers on the mainland means casting the recruitment net out to New Zealand and other countries.

Jo Palmer remains hopeful $3.5 million in incentives will keep drawing teaching talent.

“Just recently I was on the West Coast of Tasmania, I met the most amazing young teacher who moved here with his partner and their little child from Sydney, doing incredible things with the school, so we keep investing in that.”
