Former Tasmanian Premier and now Chair of the Migrant Resource Centre Peter Gutwein is pulling on his walking boots again in support of migrant and refugee communities.

Hot on the heels of a successful event that saw him walk from Burnie to Glenorchy earlier this year, he’s decided to challenge himself again, this time making his way to Sydney to trek the 330km to the nation’s capital.

He says he wants to take the conversation about the valuable contribution of migrants and those from ethnic backgrounds nationwide.

The Walk, Better Together will take place from October 1 to 9.

“After the first walk, there was a lot of interest including at a national level,” he said.

“There were some fantastic messages that came out: they key one being that we are better together.

He said along the way he’ll be joined by sporting groups and organisations, as well as migrant groups for important conversations.

“What I hope is, when we get to Parliament House in Canberra, we can have a bi-partisan finish exactly as we did in Tasmania with the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition coming together to celebrate the fact that when we are together we are better.

“I’d hope that the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition would be able to reaffirm their support for a multicultural Australia.”
