There are claims workers at Coles’ Launceston Distribution Centre are being offered significantly reduced payouts than their mainland counterparts.
It comes as around 60 workers face losing their jobs when the supermarket giant shifts to an automated distribution centre in Victoria in the next 3-5 years.
It’s claimed difference amounts to as much as $20,000.
Launceston Independent MP Rosemary Armitage said it’s a very disappointing situation.
“If they can spend $880 million on this new distribution centre, surely then can afford to treat all their workers fairly,” she said.
“They’ve written me some very nice letters telling me what good employers and a business they are, I certainly will be writing back to them because it’s certainly not fair.
“How hard for the workers – to be losing their jobs anyway, and now being treated differently.”
Coles said it is committed to reaching an agreement which workers would support.
Workers are expected to vote on the latest redundancy offer this week.
