New Zealand will remain synonymous with the Lord of the Rings after Amazon Studios announced it would film its forthcoming television series in the picturesque country.

Much to the relief of Kiwis, the American television giant says production of the series will begin in Auckland in the coming months.

New Zealand was the setting of the box-office smash Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, directed by Wellingtonian Peter Jackson, last decade.

Amazon Studios show-runners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said the list of requirements to "bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth" was exhaustive.

"We knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly-skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff," they said.

"And we're happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series."

From its association with the films, New Zealand experienced a major boost in both its tourism and screen industries.

The continued involvement will be cheered by many in those groups, as well as Kiwi fans of the fantasy epics.

The company will be eligible for a production grant, which gives at least a 20 per cent rebate on expenditure in New Zealand.

Amazon Studios' television adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novels will be set prior to 'The Fellowship of the Ring', with new storylines.

The Lord of the Rings was named Britain's most-loved novel in a BBC poll conducted in 2003, beating out Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
