Launceston councillors have voted against spending more than ten thousand dollars of ratepayers’ money to send three council officials including the Mayor to London to attend an international awards ceremony.
Marketing group Launceston Central is in the running for an award at the National Place Global conference in November for its winter CBD activation ‘The Lounge’.
Launceston Central is already going to be represented at the awards, but it had been proposed that Mayor Matthew Garwood, councillor Andrew Palmer and chief executive Sam Johnson also attend.
Councillors have deemed it unnecessary to have a presence alongside the marketing team, discussing how the spending might be received by the community at time people are struggling financially with the cost of living.
A travel package including trips to Margaret River and Canberra has been approved for the mayor.
