Bike centre works set for 2024 completion

Launceston’s popular Transport and Road Safety Centre is expected to be reopened toward the end of this year.

The ‘bike centre’ as it is more commonly known has been closed since August 2019 due to a landslip.

Council had planned to have works finished early this year but that has been set back due to price increases related to COVID and contractor availability.

Works are now expected to be complete by November this year, with the cost jumping from 2.5 million to 3.8 million dollars.

Launceston mayor Matthew Garwood said council processes also have meant the project has hit a ‘go slow’.

“It’s because of the transparency required of local government; when there are budget and amendments that need to happen, they’ve got to come through council,” he said.

“Some times we can get something through, other times we have to wait a little longer. It does push the process out. It was similar to the Albert Hall project, and similar to the tennis centre.

“But we are starting to come out the other side on some of those projects which have been slowed down”.
