Independent Launceston MP Rosemary Armitage is backing the introduction of powers for police to use scanners to detect knives in public places.
It comes as the state government looks set to make a move on knife crime, giving police extended search powers.
Ms Armitage is positive about what it might mean for areas like the Brisbane Street Mall.
“I would be pleased for Tasmania Police to have that extra tool to stop any crime from happening,” she said.
“We know that knife crime has become prevalent across Australia.
“Knives have become the weapon of choice. It’s easy to access them, particularly younger people.
“The sad part is many younger people carry them thinking they are protecting themselves and unfortunately it can be turned around very quickly and actually used against them.”
She said she had no issues regarding privacy: “Not if it contributes to public safety ,” she said.
