Mayor Matthew Garwood says reinvigorating the CBD remains a key area of focus for Launceston Council.
It comes after recent comments from local hospitality industry figures of the extent of the struggle they are facing to remain afloat in the face of declining visitation numbers in the city.
Calls have been growing louder for the council to do more to attract people into the city and boost trade.
The mayor admits the commentary is valid but says it also needs to be realistic in terms of what’s within council’s powers and resources.
“We are doing quite a lot of work at the moment (on this issue) and what some of the solutions might look like,” he said.
“But also being very aware that people have disposable income issues and cost of living pressures.
“So it’s a case of looking how to step further into those spaces, remaining aware there’s no extra funding coming in to allocate to that.”
The Launceston Chamber of Commerce is suggesting more could be done to boost “above shop” living in the city by increasing incentives for property owners and cutting red tape.
