Northern Tasmanians don’t want Hobart AFL stadium

New polling shows what many already knew or suspected; that the proposed Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart is massively on the nose among northern Tasmanians.

New EMRS polling has found an overwhelming 67 per cent of people in northern Tasmania are against the stadium.

The figures for the north-west are no more flattering, with 65 percent opposed.

In the south the for-and-against is a little closer, but still a smaller 52 percent majority want it scrapped.

The state government’s sticking by the project, with Minister Felix Ellis reaffirming the state will reap the benefits.

“We’re talking thousands of jobs,” he said.

“We’re talking hundreds of apprenticeships and massive opportunities ongoing in tourism, hospitality and other sectors.”

He also pointed out the obvious sticking point at this stage in the development of the project.

“Let’s be really clear: no stadium, no team,” he said.

His comments drew response from Independent Bass state MP Rebekah Pentland.

“It’s a poor negotiation,” she said.

“We deserve an AFL team. We are a state of passionate AFL supporters.

“But it shouldn’t come with the price tag of a new AFL stadium.”
