Launceston based Tasmanian senator Tammy Tyrrell says she’s concerned Tasmania is becoming a ‘nanny state’ after the Liberal government revealed tougher vaping laws.
Tasmania has decided to go a step further than the Federal government introducing laws that require person to be 18 years old and have a prescription to purchase nicotine vapes from locations such as pharmacies.
Ms Tyrrell says she agrees with making the products more prohibitive where children are concerned, but fears making them harder for adults to get their hands on will create a market for illegal products.
She says adults should be allowed to make their own decisions in the same way they do with alcohol.
“I believe, as human beings, we are here on this planet to experience things, and live and learn” she said.
“And sometimes the things that we do aren’t great for us.
“But we should still have the ability to make that choice.”
