The state government has tasked Stadiums Tasmania with developing a strategy to attract and retain content at major venues like UTAS Stadium.
Sports and Events Minister NICK DUIGAN said it’s about ensuring content is strategically planned across the calendar year for all areas of the state.
He said it has been prompted by the North Melbourne football club’s exit from Tasmania and the renegotiation of Hawthorn’s deal.
“We want to ensure that conversations relating to fixtures don’t occur in isolation from other teams and codes, and there is a strategic approach to planning content at Tasmanian venues, and any gaps are filled where possible,” Minister Duigan said.
“This will include but not be limited to AFL games both pre and post our entry into the national competition.
“As part of the planning strategy, Stadiums Tasmania will work with all relevant stakeholders including the AFL, the Tasmania Devils Football Club, the Department of State Growth, the Hawthorn Football Club, the City of Launceston and venue operators.
“We will also consider how we can approach future opportunities more broadly as we look to attract and retain more content across sporting codes, entertainment and events at venues right around Tasmania.
“Tasmanians deserve having access to high quality events.”
