Tasmania's crime rate up by almost 10 pct

Tasmania's crime rate has increased by almost 10 per cent, but police insist the state is a safe place.

The total number of offences reported in the year to June 30 increased by 9.4 per cent, compared to a 10.4 per cent drop the previous year, new crime statistics show.

"Tasmania is a safe place. We have one of the lowest crime rates in the country," Assistant Commissioner Glenn Frame said on Saturday.
