There is a bid to keep the Aurora Australis icebreaker in Tasmania.
After 31 years toting Antarctic scientific teams and supplies, the ship completed its final voyage on March 25th after a run to MacQuarie Island.
Federal Independent Member for Clark , Andrew Wilkie, is worried the ship is about to be sold overseas or even end up dismantled for scrap.
Its distinctive orange presence has been a fixture of Hobart's waterfront for decades, so he is lobbying the Prime Minister, Premier, and the owner of the ship for time to assess its cultural, heritage and social importance to the state.
Active proposals include the Aurora Australis remaining in service in some capacity or becoming a tourism and cultural asset.
