Charity thief sentenced

Courts Burnie 20151009 002

A Burnie woman who racked up $43,000 on a not-for-profity charity's tab has avoided jail.

Rebecca Dorothy Baker used a company credit card for bills, food, home furniture and even Taylor Swift concert tickets while she was an accounts manager at Ability Tasmania Group between 2013 and 2015 - an organisation helping people with a disability get a job.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to stealing by misappropriation and has since repaid the money.

Justice Greg Geason handed Baker a 16-month suspended prison sentence and 240 hours community service, on the condition she commit no crimes punishable by jail time in the next 3 years.
