Warning ahead of rock lobster season

Rock Lobster 2

On the eve of Tasmania's rock lobster season, two commercial fishermen are in serious hot water after police allegedly busted them with undersized and misreported catch from within marine reserves.

They're facing fish trafficking charges after a complex and lengthy police investigation.

Two fishermen in their twenties from Seven Mile Beach and Sandy Bay as well as a 52-year-old Acacia Hills man have been bailed for a February court appearance.

A 15-metre vessel was seized, but then returned under stringent conditions.

Police wish to remind members of the public and businesses that with the Rock Lobster season about to commence, legal seafood can only be purchased from approved fishermen, wholesalers and retailers. Receipts must be obtained and in the case of purchased Rock Lobster tags must he attached to the fish. Serious fines and special penalties may apply.

Illegal fishing activity can be reported to Fishwatch on 0427 655 557.
