Glenorchy contender pulls out

The race for the vacant Glenorchy mayoral position is narrowing, with confirmation alderman Steven King is pulling out of the race to support Bec Thomas' tilt for the top job.

“I’ve watched Alderman Bec Thomas evolve in the role of Acting Mayor over the past 6-8 weeks and I have come to the conclusion that I feel she is the best person to serve the community in this role at this time," said Mr King on Wednesday morning.

“She has demonstrated her ability to develop and maintain positive relationships and these are the attributes we need in our leader to continue moving forward.”

Ald. Thomas is welcoming Mr King's endorsement for the position left vacant by Kristie Johnston's election to Parliament.

"Steven and I have a very good working relationship," she said.

"After much consideration and discussion he has decided to withdraw his intention to nominate."

Nominations for Glenorchy, Kingborough and West Coast byelections opened this week and postal ballots will be sent out later this month.
