Bass Strait shipping and transport pioneers remembered in book

The Holymans

A book detailing the history of Tasmanian shipping and transport family, the Holymans, will be launched in Launceston on Monday.

William Holyman, established a fleet of vessels based in Devonport's Mersey River in the 1880s, servicing Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
A third generation of the family established Holyman Airways, which later became Australian National Airways in 1934, becoming the country's first major airline, later amalgamating with Ansett.
The Holyman family's Tasmanian investments also included timber mills, car dealerships, hotels, and processing factories.
