Women's health advocates are welcoming news that abortions will be made available at all Tasmanian public hospitals from early October.
Currently those in the north and northwest have to travel to Hobart to access a surgical termination.
Family Planning Tasmania CEO Cedric Mannen says the government's announcement will have a huge impact at a low cost.
"A woman in this situation is vulnerable by definition and also by the very fact that they are seeking support for a really important health issue. Reducing the barriers to accessing support by providing through local hospitals is an absoute benefit," he said.
The Launceston General, Mersey Community and North West Regional Hospitals come online from October 4.
In the last 90 days alone, Family Planning Tasmania referred 12 women from Launceston for surgical termination of pregnancy in Hobart.
"It means now that women don't have to travel away from their families and support networks. They can actually access abortions in their own region. So for women in Launceston in particular that have had to travel down to Hobart, this is a very welcome announcement," Mr Mannen said.
