Free central Hobart bus loop on the cards

Metro Fabris

Hobart City Council has unanimously voted in favour of a free bus service for the central business district.

CEO Kelly Grisby will explore options with Metro and other bus operators for a no-cost zone or loop within the city centre.

The motion was moved at Monday night's council meeting by Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, who said the service would supplement existing public transport.

“Free city loops, free public transport fare zones, and cheap on-demand bus services are a common feature of all capital cities in the nation as well as a number of other major cities,” Councillor Reynolds said.

“This is an initiative that would greatly benefit Hobart and its residents, particularly in the current economic climate.”

Launceston has a similar system in place which also connects to commuter parking.
