A horror crash in Tasmania's south has claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The 83-year-old was exiting the St. Canice retirement village in Sandy Bay, when her Holden Cruze hatchback failed to negotiate a left-hand bend in the road and collided with a residential villa.

Emergency Services were called to the scene at around 10.30 yesterday morning, the driver later passing away.

No one else was injured during the collision.

Hobart Uniform, Forensic Services and Crash Investigation Services attended the scene, looking into the circumstances surrounding the single vehicle crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
