Eco friendly mine

Not only is there an intention to reopen Tasmania's Mount Lyell mine, but the aim's to achieve zero emissions when it does.

Peter Walker, the boss at Copper Mines of Tasmania, has spoken of access to green Hydro power giving the company the chance to have an operating mine with no footprint sometime in the future.

He's also pointed to recent copper price rises and likely future demand increases strengthening the case for a mine restart.

The mine was put into care and maintenance in 2014 after three workers' deaths, leading to major job losses on the West Coast, which has been trying to rebuild the economy and has been the focus of government stimulus projects.
