Flu toll grows

21 elderly people have now died while battling influenza across Tasmania this season, around seven or eight are thought to have succumbed in the past week.

17 of the state's aged care facilities are currently wrestling with the virus.

Director of Public Health Mark Veitch advises the peak of the 'flu season was in late August and it now appears to be declining.

“This year’s flu season started earlier than in recent years and has been moderately severe,” Dr Veitch said.

Elderly patients have a better chance of survival and reduced symptoms with the medication Tamiflu, but stock levels are dwindling because of high demand.
