Cruise ship season full steam ahead

With the cruise ship season just around the corner, industry figures have gathered in Hobart to talk about the 2019-20 year and how the state can increase return visitation.

65 liners are expected to dock in Tasmania's south in the upcoming season, nearly double the number of five years ago.

Alex Heroys from Destination Southern Tasmania says creating the best experience for every passenger is vital.

“We are focusing on the customer experience, understanding the differences between cruise lines, promoting return visitation by cruise passengers and increasing regional dispersal and yield.”

Mr Heroys says in the 2019-20 cruise ship season, 65 cruise ships will come to Southern Tasmania.

“This is a small increase on 63 ships in 2018-19, but the growth has been strong since 37 ships arrived in 2014-15.”

Mr Heroys said Hobart will see three cruise ships in the city on New Year’s Eve, two of which are following the Sydney-Hobart yacht race.

“Le Laperouse from the Ponant line, Noordam from Royal Caribbean and Coral Expeditions will be in port. Coral Expeditions will then circumnavigate Tasmania on a 14-day cruise, starting on New Year’s Day,” he added.
