TasTAFE campus to close

Launceston CBD's TasTAFE campus is set to close down.

The vocational education provider has confirmed its consolidation to nearby Alanvale, where it plans to upgrade facilities and equipment.

There's no specific timeline in place for the closure and move, although it's expected to be completed by the end of the year.

It coincides with calls from Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie for the Federal Government to commit to greater funding for the state's depleted TAFE system.

She wants some of the $4 billion set aside for emergency drought and flood relief to be diverted into the sector.

It comes only months after she secured a deal to wipe Tasmania's historic housing debt, in exchange for her vote in the Senate.

TasTAFE recently said it considers the majority of its infrastructure to be below standard for modern vocational education and training.

The group has also been plagued by recruitment issues over the past 12 months.

"When it comes to infrastructure, TAFEs are pretty depleted," Ms Lambie told ABC Radio this morning.

"For me, it's really important to make sure these trade schools stay around".
