Tasmanian firefighters are heading to Queensland today to assist with that state's bushfire threat.

Around 45 Tasmanian firefighters and support crew took on the worst of NSW's catastrophic conditions on Tuesday.

Now we're lending QLD a hand - 23 Tasmania Fire Service personnel are due to fly out from Hobart on Wednesday afternoon after a briefing at Cambridge.

They'll have their hands full with conditions deteriorating in the Sunshine State; more than 60 fires were still burning in Queensland as of Wednesday morning and the 5-star Spicers Peak Lodge inland from the Gold Coast has been evacuated as a bushfire bears down on the Scenic Rim.

South of the border, at least 50 homes were destroyed or damaged by bushfires which swept across New South Wales on Tuesday.

13 firefighters and eight civilians were injured.

TFS Chief Officer Chris Arnol says Tasmania can expect a similar threat in coming months, and we're being warned to prepare now.

“While weather like we’re seeing this week is no bushfire threat, very quickly we’ll see the temperatures rise, bush dry out and winds increase which is the perfect recipe for bushfire," he said.

“Tasmania experiences around 1800 bushfires each bushfire season and this year we’ll be doing all we can to protect lives and property, but we also need the community to do their bit."

Authorities advise those living near bushland should:

  • Clear 30m of vegetation and flammable material (such as wood piles) around houses and buildings;
  • Clear out gutters of dried and dead leaves;
  • Know evacuation routes;
  • Write a bushfire plan so they know what to do when a fire occurs.
